My mother went to church. She was terribly disappointed to learn I am no more a believer today than I was last month.

Instead, I found myself watching this video a couple dozen times. Amazing. The part where it zooms out to map all the known galaxies and there are those big black patches? Blows your mind.

Barack Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize.

'Cuz you can win one for not being George Bush. Holy. Shit.

You guys saw the Louis Vuitton site with astronauts, right?

Kwatsi Alibaruho is NASA’s first African-American flight director.

He has a Ben Sisko/Defiant themed mission patch. That's a real hardcore Niner, there.

Kepler is operational!

The real reason I made a 'space is sexy' post tonight: OMG KEPLER WORKS NOW GUYS. Eh, I think Kepler is a pretty cool project, looks for planets and doesn't afraid of anything.

I started watching 'Merlin' the other night with Cooper. We watched about seven straight episodes. Unfortunately I failed at DVD making and we watched some of them out of order, including the second episode as the first episode. Doubly unfortunate as that second episode is literally one of the worst hours of television I've ever seen.

Anyway, it's okay, I'll probably watch the rest of the season tonight. Cooper and I almost invented a drinking game which was 'every time Anthony Stewart Head gets to have range, take a drink', because most of the show involves his character being a complete douche to create third act drama. Strangely, they just gave interesting backstory to Gaius, which makes it two Gaiuses in a row who are interesting characters.

Mainly the whole thing makes me wonder why the BBC never made a good version of "The Once and Future King". And also why I can't find my copy for a reread.

Here's a video of a historian who made a working reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism.

There's a movie coming out called Nothing But The Truth which is a thinly veiled version of the Valarie Plame scandal. It's written by Rob Lurie, who did 'Commander-in-Chief', that shit West Wing knockoff, and the much better film "The Contender". Interestingly, it not only has Alan Alda, but some guy named President Lyman who gets shot.

Neil Gaiman's When the Saucers Came poster. He read this at the Las Vegas Book Festival and it was my favorite bit that he read.

Remember when I did that poll about how it makes me cranky that Star Trek and Doctor Who have both the Many Worlds and Copenhagen Interpretations? Well, this interview with Bob Orci says that the new Star Trek movie (and conversely, ALL OF STAR TREK EVER) conforms strictly to the Many Worlds theory of Quantum Physics. And that's why you shouldn't worry about the movie being a reboot, because it's not a reboot -- it's a story where our Spock (Spock Prime? Spock from the 616? Will's Spock?) travels backward in time into a different universe where things are mostly the same but just a bit different.

Finally: I can't afford to pay my yearly LJ fees, and it's due in three days. I don't know if I should beg my mother or beg my friends list. But since I beg my mother for lots of money lately, and some of you have the unfortunate habit of liking my shiftless ass, maybe I'll beg you.

Mostly I just wanted to talk about the physics of Star Trek, though.

Dude. Where's the download for Einstein and Eddington? I want to see that movie so painfully bad -- Andy Serkis! David Tennant! PHYSICS. I'm about to cave and watch it on iPlayer, but dammit. I want it on a DVD so I can watch in the comfort of my bed.

1. Leaked footage from Buffy the Animated Series.

About a million years after the fact, I think we can say that it doesn't live up to the fantastic hype. Giles continues to get the best lines.

2. The Super Rare Devil's Cigar Fungus, found only in Japan and TEXAS?

3. Skience also finds a bunch of gorillas and gets really excited because now they're that much less closer to extinction. Well, it gives me the warm fuzzies.

There's water on mars, but every time my flist lets me know I hear it ala John Hoynes. Did you cover up that we may have found Life on Mars? You bet.
