The Beeb releases a bunch of archived documents about creating Doctor Who.
I got this link from
calapine and
taraljc. The actual background information about the character of the Doctor is kind of lulzy, but not for some reason, anything I didn't know or you couldn't intimate from having watched a bunch of black and white serials.
No, my favorite part is the first two documents, in which the Beeb apparently randomly assigns some screenwriters to survey science fiction. And they proceed to piss on everything written prior to 1960. No, seriously, it's pretty funny when they more or less dismiss CS Lewis as a religious crank, and Asimov and Bradbury and Clarke are all well and good but it's too advanced for the proles watching telly and besides, two of them aren't British. Finally, they conclude, the Beeb should really try and avoid the pulpy end of the market with all those evil robots, apocalyptic endings and BEMs. The note concludes on: don't worry, the writers'll figure it out.
Ha ha ha. (*wipes tear*)
