WHAT?

Some punks stole the 'Work Makes You Free' sign off the Auschwitz gate.

WHAT? I think I should be more outraged, because I'm sure it was some neo-Nazi punks and not some bored kids who did it for the lulz, but actually I think this is kind of funny. In a totally macbre way, of course.

I just hope...

I just hope it's not some junkies stealing it for scrap or something stupid. And that they don't go tossing it in a river or something when they sober up and realize how completely useless what they did is. I kind of hope it's some private collector who gets caught and has to return the sign.

My first thought when I read about it this morning was, "Why would you steal that?" Not in a super-offended way, but in a completely baffled way. It's such a weird thing to steal, even for neo-Nazis.

I didn't think of that. :(

Aren't they all into collecting memorabilia and shit? Like: this is a fork that was used at the same banquet that Hitler was at kind of memorabilia? I kind of figure it's like the ultimate collector's item if you're into Hitler.

Yeah, they are, but they couldn't display it or anything. They'd have to watch out who they showed it off to. What are they going to do, put it in a crate in the basement?

Possibly. I'm sure they'll get it back eventually. (But if they don't, that's sad but... the sign itself really is a sign and not the signifier, you know?)
