I Only Thought I Had Reached a Limit

See, I didn't think it was possible to care less about a fandom than Harry Potter. Except my dislike gradually turned to a casual sort of acceptance.

Nay, friends. For I have now seen the limit of my loathing and indeed, its name was Twilight.

Die in a Fire, Horrible Fandom, Die.

I don't know anything about it except that video about the AMAYZING BOOOOOK.

I know more than I want to know.

Everything I hear about the books sounds ghastly, but I must confess I find it hilarious that poor Robert P. tries his damn best to get fired from the franchise by declaring his loathing for the character he plays and how creeped out he is by the author at every opportunity.

I read a hilarious story on the New York Times, of all places, of Robert P. being shadowed by their reporter as he has to press the flesh at a mall.

One of us needs to take the bait and fucking read the thing. I tried to pick it up at a Borders but wasn't even interested in skimming the pages.

I kind of secretly love the Harry Potter fandom because their crazy is so much better than anyone else's crazy. You just sit back and watch while everyone riots and froths at the mouth.

Twilight on the other hand. I don't even know anything about the fandom, but the thought of it frightens me.

... it's the only fandom I've ever seen where the fans are motivated by hate and not love.

well said. there's something about sparkling vampires that just seems wrong to me...

SPARKLY SPARKLY VAMPIRES?

yes... hrm. quit that, would you? ;p

(Dracula didn't sparkle. Angel, Dru, and Spike don't sparkle. There's no need for the new guy to sparkle.)

[identity profile] skywaterblue.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because Spike and Dru are sexy and know the BDSM.

Hrm. Yes. Leather and chains trump sparkle, every time.

I love Twilight. They may be the best books ever. Someday I plan to read them.

... aaaand, Stu wins the thread. Congrats to Stu. :p

If a fandom leads to sporking like this (http://stoney321.livejournal.com/317176.html), I am cautiously in favor.

Really, though, these books, their writing, and their message stink on whole-wheat toast.

Did I really read something about how she gets pregnant with a ghastly death baby and the werewolves eat it out of her? *cries*

[identity profile] rosmar.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, yes. Fortunately, I think many a Twilight fan was no longer thus after reading that book. You can push the envelope too far, dammit!

Interesting about the Mormon parallels, I had no idea that was part of what made it so scary-awful. I just knew the writing read like terrible fanfic (I had seen excerpts).

[identity profile] rosmar.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, for reals, about the writing. Someone asked me just today why I haven't read them, and I replied, "Why would I, when I could read a good book?" Yuck.
