But Crisis on Multiple Kiras is finally over?
It really does pain me to have to write this, but: dude, the Star Trek book line for 2010 looks really crappy. Except for the new JJ-verse novels. (Is it too late to petition for more Gaila?)
I'm basing this on the fact that the books are the only way to get your 24th Century Trek fix, and I'm not all that happy with what happened in Destiny.
Okay, so I'm glad they finally offed the Borg for real, but I'm not incredibly fond of the reveal that the first Borg were humans, and that's the cause for the Federation to take a bash in Alpha Quadrant politics. I think that's a really stupid way to create conflict in the 24th Century. Like the Romulans can't hate the fuck out of the Federation post-Dominion War all on their own?
(I am also not crazy the Borg actually got to fuck up Vulcan and Andor, but like, the new movie blew Vulcan up and I was OK with that, so I shall not complain.)
The only good thing about it is really that the Typhon Pact sounds like an excellent good time. To unite against the Borg, the Romulans Star Empire (there's been a civil war, so there are two Romulan states at the moment), the Tzenkethi, the Breen, the Gorn, the Tholians and the Holy Order of the Kinyasha (book only baddies) formed a Federation of their own.
Why so relevant: the Typhon Pact books seem fun, Riker v. Gorn. But I also still don't like the fact that Ezri Dax is a Captain. No one knows what to do with that character still, pah. It's technically a DS9 book, but what's the big appeal of Ezri Dax v. Breen?
Meanwhile: holy shit, they're jumping the DS9 timeline up to meet the rest of the 24th Century books. But what happens to the next season's storyline, with the Ascendants, the Gamma Quadrant baddies who want to kill the Prophets? Are they going to drop all of it? WILL WE NEVER FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS TO ODO?
Goddamn.

I haven't been following Titan, except that they do sound like good books. I feel kind of bad for the Voyager fans, because you'd think someone would be able to write Voyager books that appeal, but apparently not? That whole series is just doomed to suck, forever and ever.
I am glad to see that there are gonna be post-Reboot novels too. Hopefully they don't suck. :P
If Gaila is dead in them, I will be sad. I hope the writers hit the shipping of Spock/Uhura HARD, but part of me thinks that none of it will be as good as fic. Unless they're really cracky I think they'll end up defaulting to the less fun characterizations of (recent) TOS books.

Yeah. Voyager was just full of missed opportunities, both in the show and in the books (pre- and post-Endgame).
I've only read a few TOS books, but I have a bunch of them (I'd have more but that particular garage sale, my mom wouldn't let me get the whole Table O' Trek and I couldn't impart to her how rare such a find was) and one of these days I'll get around to reading them.
And yeah, I'll be pissed if Gaila dies too, though I would like her presence explained. An Orion in Starfleet? I suppose stranger things have happened, but... o.O

while i had issues with Destiny here and there, i agree. the Typhon Pact does sound quite intriguing.
also i admit to loving the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins anthology. and another Myriad Universe book. AND more New Frontier.

yea i hear you that. tho TBH that was one of the things i DID like abt Destiny. David Mack actually DID SOMETHING with frigging Ezri. she drove me nuts onscreen with her whining. to this day, "Field of Fire" is the only Ezri ep i can watch without wanting to strangle her. YMMV.

hopefully they do the smart thing and summarize it OR touch up on it in a later book...and i am waiting to see WTF they do to Kira in this month's The Soul Key. if they kill her off like they killed off Kathryn in a TOTALLY dumb ass move, i'm so fucking done.

I love Ezri, but the book series is kind of all over that character. First she decides she's not going to be a counselor anymore, then they break her up with Bashir, now she's got a ship of her own and she's not even really a DS9 character anymore? The character just has no resemblance to the one we were left with at the end of WYLB.
I'm not opposed to her being a Captain, but I don't feel like they did enough work to justify all of that. Let's see Vaughn leave and Ezri can be Commander under Kira for a while, you know? Maybe it'll happen in the gap years... sigh...

The timeline for STO/Countdown makes way more sense, mainly because Destiny doesn't happen.

it sounds like an awesome story...esp on the heels of Fearful Symmetry, but the bolded part is what makes me REALLY, REALLY nervous.
there have been many cynical comments from people pissy about the axing of Kathryn in Before Dishonor (don't blame them! it was a BS move). many claim because Kathryn was (supposedly) disliked so much by the fans, that that is why it was done. some are feeling that all the major female characters are being disposed of or shoved into the background.
now this doesn't make as much sense to me with Ezri captaining the Aventine, Elizabeth Shelby first captaining the Trident and then being promoted to admiral in NF's After the Fall, and a woman as Federation President. but the argument i've gotten back to the above is that Shelby and Nan Bracco are book-only characters (and therefore insignificant to them...personally i LOVE them both) and Ezri will be killed off sooner or later because of her serious unpopularity in season seven. (yea and then who's gonna run the Aventine--Sam Bowers?? :coughbullshitcough:)
i've heard bad things abt Countdown and i wish i had the time to explore STO but i don't. may end up resorting to rereading my fave books and going through piles of fic at this rate....
