When you mention GO NORTH, GET LAMP, even if you're doing it a bit hyperbolically, it's hard not to get the impression that even though you aware of MUSHes and IF, you don't actually know what we're talking about, and about the actual, current state of MU*ing today.
Right, it all comes across a bit as if a British tourist got off a plane at JFK and said to the first American he saw, 'how about that President Reagan, hmm?' Directional and object-related commands are so rarely used in modern MUSH practice.
With regards to the gender issues, I'll defer back to skywaterblue, who makes a much more elegant presentation of her argument than I could.
I'd argue that you've done a great service by citing the work I am so sloppily referencing. If he doesn't understand MU*ing as it exists now, he's almost certainly not up to date on current politics and academics in fandom.
I'll add that the Pern MU* I administrate at, Second Pass has an extensive log list you can read to see what roleplay on a TinyMUSH tends to resemble these days. simon_fox, you're welcome to join us and I can show you around - the address is riverdark.net port: 1234. I recommend using a client rather than logging in via raw Telnet. SimpleMU is best for PC, and Atlantis is best for Mac.
