Non-spoilery: I took my little brother after dropping off the PDFs for Drunk: A Comic About Vegas Bar Stories. (The art for that, btw, is fucking phenomenal and I hardly deserve to be in it, but what the hell. I encourage you to buy a copy now.) OH MY GOD. It's so awesome we wanted to stay in the theater and watch it again and again. I'm really, really glad I made my brother watch some old Star Trek before we went: I think he got a hell of a lot out of it.

But we're going tomorrow with my dad! I'm hopeful I can convince Cooper to come see it too.

AASDFTGYH. I HAVE SHIPPED SPOCK/UHURA FOR LIKE, EVER AND EVER, AND NOW IT'S CANON. Like, really really really canon. They're not flirting, the film outright states that they're already shagging. I'm not sure how I feel about it, because now we're going to have to have like an epic three-way shipwar, whereas before it was a cool rareparing no one was bothered about. Vulcan? Looks more beautiful than it ever has before, I mean wow. And oh my god, when it gets blown up you really feel it. Nice touch: the last thing we see of Vulcan is from Vasquez Rocks! GORN FIGHT FOR THE MOTHERFUCKIN' WIN.

I like that the film takes a Trek approach to the death of Vulcan. Although the planet is gone, and six billion Vulcans are dead, Spock saves most of the High Council and the remaining 10,000 or so Vulcans are going to find a new world and start a colony. That seems to me, to be the essence of Trek: things are awful, yes, and Spock couldn't save his mother, but life goes on. The Vulcans will rebuild and survive.

Oh so Trek: the Golden Gate Bridge nearly gets blown up and there's a random alien on the Bridge. (There aren't really as many aliens in this as you would think, although Kirk does almost shag an Orion cadet.)

I don't think it's very slashy. I do think the entire cast is great at their jobs.

I'll probably have even more to say tomorrow!

I loved Spock/Uhura! It took me totally by surprise, but I absolutely loved it.

There was one moment, though, where I could have sworn Kirk and Spock were going to kiss. But as for slash potential, I honestly saw it more with Spock/McCoy (which...their relationship has always interested me more) and Kirk/Scotty.

I especially enjoyed two theoretic inclusions: That humans are equally the best at making friends and blowing shit up, and the deployment of the Doctor 10 Maneuver:

Good Guy: I'm going to offer you help and a chance to stop anyone else from dying.

Bad Guy: I refuse your offer!

Good Guy: Then I will burn you out of time like you were nothing.

Bad Guy: (((Nothing! because he just got burnt out of time!)))

Spock's line, "No, not this time," is out of character for him. Well, maybe but the film makes a good justification for a new characterization for him.

Meanwhile, the humans being kind and best buds but ALSO the best at blowing shit up? You k ow how every Trek race has a defining trait? That's humans in Trek.
