I always wonder this. Surely leaving sites up during maintenance processes makes customers more frustrated and makes the maintenance take longer.

lol_meme runs year round and I think that was the main inspiration. anon_merlin is a spin off of the Who meme which goes year round too. So I think it depends on which meme style you prefer.

That said, I don't think it really has a positive or negative effect either way, but if you want to blame it, I don't care if you do.
