14 MONTHS UNTIL NEIL GAIMAN DOCTOR WHO TIEM

This was the only ray of sunshine in my day today, so haters can step to the left. I couldn't even have a sip of what I made in bartending, because I had the car and it fucking dumped rain all day and I had to visit my mom in the hospital and... wah wah real life.

FUCK REAL LIFE. GAIMAN DOCTOR WHO TIEM.

PeeEss: isitgaimantiemnao.com? It makes me lols, but I'm slightly worried that people will start using it a lot, or it'll get NeilFailed at some point, so I put a paypal button up just in case. Sorry if that seems shameless, but when it was a dumb lulz for myself, it seemed reasonable to not worry about paying for lots of bandwidth.

It amused me, and really, that's all I ask out of life.

Speaking of fandom service: LJ is being gender fail again. If you need a Dreamwidth code, hit me up.

Animated Movies Meme. )

103/144, but this list doesn't have a single Japanese feature film animation produced for domestic consumption. When you consider I also manage to see many of those in a year/lifetime, this list should be much higher.

This is the 24hr life style of me: last night I got really obsessed with the idea of buying the new iPad instead of a new TV, because I adore my iPod Touch. Except that upon consideration my ardor has cooled. You see, apparently @jason has the 2nd Gen iPad already, and that one features DUAL CAMERAS and a SOLAR CHARGER. He says that it will be out in October.

So I guess that can wait, as the reason I really wanted it was because I need to buy a video/camera unit of some sort for my kickstarter project and the idea of having a portable HDTV/camera unit was really appealing. I guess I'll stick to buying a cheap TV and maybe get a Canon Powershot or something.

I do have to say, it's way cheaper than I thought it would be, and I think the AT&T plan is actually a pretty good deal. Let me explain: 14.99/250 gbs a month would be terrible, except that it's non-exclusive so you can cancel at any time. And I'm paying for unlimited wifi at home already. So at 14.99, that prices it right to jaunt around town with, without worrying about going over. I feel like I should get more flash GBs at the top end, though. 64gbs isn't enough to piss in with my collection of data.

Still, it's really pretty cool and I can't wait to have one. It's sort of the computer I always wanted and never thought would be reality.

Speaking of more stuff I had set aside money for, but now cannot buy: the Eleven Doctor boxset isn't out until September? I'm bummed because I can't/refuse to pay for the single card releases of the Doctors.

But you know what is kind of cool and I'm sure I'm gonna buy it? The Eleventh Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, with Phillips and Flathead attachments! Finally, a real reason to keep one in my purse. It would be kind of excellent if the batteries powered a low-speed driveshaft, but I'm sure they're just for the blinky lights. Maybe for Twelve....

Random links:

That Neil Gaiman article in the New Yorker, which I actually read ages ago. 'The Beat' called it correctly on the first night when they said the most interesting thing about it is the on-record comments about Scientology.

Dinosaur feathers were ginger-brown, white and dark brown! Kind of exciting, actually, to know what colors a dinosaur actually was, even if they do sound like jumped up sparrows.

Here's more on Russell T Davies planning on crossing Doctor Who over with Star Trek:

4. Yet another [idea for the 2009 Easter Special] was a kind of Star Trek pastiche – essentially “the Doctor on board the Enterprise, puncturing all that Starfleet pomposity with this sheer Doctor-ness”.

Sounds kind of like a Galaxy Quest thing, which I probably would have really enjoyed. (Also, as if 'Waters on Mars' weren't Trek pastiche enough, though I understand it's also a Troughton 'we're all doomed on a space base' episode.)

Though I have to say, the phrase 'Starfleet pomposity' gives me serious doubts. If you're going to do it, even as a pastiche, you should have a little respect, dare I say love, for the material. Though I guess pomposity also depends on which of the series, and which of the Captains you're most trying to play off... Picard and Archer and Janeway were pretty up their own asses from time to time. Kirk and Sisko would have slapped the shit out of the Tenth Doctor and not thought twice about it.

What I'm saying is: so I'm sad it didn't happen, but at least my brother and I didn't BREAK OUR TELEVISIONS IN RAGE.

In other crossover news, the awesome Una McCormack is writing a Doctor Who novel for the Tenth Doctor! It is called 'The King's Dragon', out in July. I think this is very new news, as I can't find a blurb or anything for this. Based on that title, I dream about a Merlin crossover which I am 100% sure isn't what it will be about, but girls can wish.

This reminded me that I have long-delayed posting about her last Star Trek: Deep Space Nine title, "The Never-Ending Sacrifice", literally a Star Trek book I was SO excited for that I almost pre-ordered on Amazon. It could only be a book about Cardassia with that title, and Una McCormack had previously distinguished herself by writing an excellent Garak.

I think all DS9 fans, or maybe all people who vaguely like Star Trek should get this, as it was both great and a unique addition to the line. )

So you should pick that up if you like Star Trek. In fact, I'd push [personal profile] selenak to read it, as I think she'd love it. I couldn't put it down.

In other DS9 news, we're getting an ongoing comic series from IDW! I picked up the first issue excitedly.

Fool's Gold, Issue One )

Anyway, that's shaping up to be a fun trip back to my favorite Star Trek. I hope you all pick it up so they continue to make more comics for meeeee.

See, if you're spoiled out you don't really get as angry about things as you should, or maybe I just don't love Doctor Who enough... also, it's like comics. You just know there will be crack and you get over it.

That said, Vulcans Do It With Logic. )

Despite all that, I enjoyed watching this. It was crackular and it's over now and nothing happened in it that could really hurt me, as it was fiction and just a flesh wound really.

It is Moff Tiem Nao. Yay.

First viewing: my brother and I adored the shit out of this. I was spoilered out to all ridiculousness - but RTD did a really good job concealing at least some of this material so that I didn't really know how it all fit together.

Anyway, only episode of TV that had me and my brother slackjawed and gaping for about ten minutes after the end. So in honor of that, I'm going to rewatch it right now and write down whatever seems to interest me in this rewatch.

Hey, it's a review of The End of Time: Part One! )

Presumably that includes one well-known British science fiction series – Doctor Who. But at this point, can you at least acknowledge that you’ve worked on it?

Hypothetically speaking, was I in any way involved with the next season of any long-running science fictional television series, hypothetically speaking were that true, it would also be true that as far as I know until the second of January nothing is being said…

Christopher Eccleston and Naoko Mori in 'Naked Lennon'

Yes, that's right. The Ninth Doctor will finally shag Toshiko Sato of Torchwood, except they'll be playing the parts of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

I ask you, interwebs: was there any project more clearly conceived as 'this is a thing which will make Tori happy' before? The only thing better would be if John Lennon and Yoko Ono then fought dinosaurs.
skywaterblue: (Las Vegas!)
It's up on Tube Of You, and having nothing better to do, I decided to watch it. I kind of wish I hadn't - it's full of awesome never actually been to Nevada fail.

The really ironic thing is that they could do a story set in Nevada, since Nevada basically looks like a quarry with the Rocky Mountains in the background. And this is partially why whenever someone points out a quarry on the old show I am like, Oh? Because my world normally looks like rocks and shit with some scraggy plants growing off of it.

And the best part is that there's also unexpected Indian fail. Did you know that whenever an awful thing happens to a Native character they bust out 'This is just like when X massacre happened to my people!" LOLS no wai.

All this AND crappy animation. I hate you right now, Doctor Who.

"Waters of Mars" actually gave me a nightmare last night. QFT.
skywaterblue: (neil gaiman would unhappen so much)
I was spoilered out to all ridiculous, but when I FINALLY managed to download this, immediately after I watched it I thought it was the best episode ever. Except when I watched it again immediately after with my brother, I decided the first half hour is really draggy. So no, "Midnight" is still my favorite.

Here are the real spoilers. )

So yeah, really enjoyed it.

Actually, I'm going to try and get through some real life announcements first:

The selling of the zine at the Vegas Valley Comic Fest went well. I sold about twelve copies and gave out some freebies to the publishers (as you do) who were not THAT interested but polite about it (as they are). I was kind of bummed about it, but that's life, you gotta keep chipping at it to get shit done. If you for some reason want a copy, it will be up on etsy in a bit for three bucks, and you'll be able to pick one up at Alternate Reality in Las Vegas, and Chicago Comics/Quimbys as soon as I have the time to run some more off and send them out, etc.

Anyway, Abby and Joe and I had a good time, despite the fact I had slept all of six hours in the last 72 and was about to kill someone to eat their flesh. (Or fall asleep over my drawing board, one or the other.)

Now to Doctor Who shit. Before "The Waters of Mars" airs, I just want to mourn the death of my long strangled ditch-baby spec script.

Possibly spoilers for 'The Waters of Mars' (Kind of only spoilery if you are going into this episode absolutely blind.) )

I'm not saying mine is better than RTD's, because quite frankly, mine has some epic plotholes where even diagramming couldn't help me figure out how the timey-wimey worked. I just think it's a hilarious story that I will tell you all now for bragging rights.

Now some reviews of TV:

Sarah Jane Adventures: This week's baddie was a Time Lord in Disguise. That makes two Time Lords in Disguise this season. I actually thought it was kind of boring, missed Luke a lot. As usual, Clyde had all the best lines. The Aspie Science Kid was annoying.

Merlin: Jesus fucking Christ were the Troll episodes a waste of time, which is all I have to say about them. Well, actually, Uther making out with the troll was kind of brain bleachy too, despite the fact you knew the show was gonna go there.

Spoilers for 'The Witchfinder' )

Mad Men: Okay, wow. )

Looking forward to next year!

First shot of the Eleventh Doctor's Costume!

It looks pretty good! Not overwhelmingly unique, but it has a lot of room to grow on you with the characterization. I'm excited now. (I think what Karen-as-Amy is wearing is more telling.)

Sean Bean picks up Game of Thrones along with Peter Dinklage.

Casting: officially too good.

Finally: have you heard the rumor that Tennant is going to be playing Bilbo Baggins?

THAT makes a LOT MORE SENSE than the rumor that the big sci-fi movie he's supposed to be in is the Doctor Who flick. I could never figure out who thought a Doctor Who movie was a good idea, since no one in America watches it. Unfortunately, Peter Jackson said he wasn't going to announce anything big at San Diego Comic-Con, which kind of puts my whole conspiracy theory to bed.

I really hope there's no Who movie, though. It just sounds like a bad, bad idea.

Her name is Karen Gillan, she was a soothsayer in The Fires of Pompeii, and she's a n00b. The Guardian has the sauce!

I'm excited because she's hot. I admit it. I'm shallow like that.

My Own Beginning; or, The Doctor Gets A(nother) Reboot, by [personal profile] stellar_dust.

It started in the spaceport bar on Altair 6. The Doctor tended to avoid the Federation period of Earth's history - much more interesting goings-on during the Empire - but it had been a while since he'd checked in on them, and he'd struck up a conversation with the dark-haired Starfleet officer nursing a Saurian brandy in the corner booth.

Starfleet officers, much like UNIT officers, came in two sizes: boring with a side of extra boring, and explosively fascinating. Lieutenant Chekov was shaping up to be one of the interesting ones.

How can you not want to read this? Trust me, it's totally brilliant and if you like either of these shows you'll have a great time.
skywaterblue: (Spock is the Cosmos)
Your run on Doctor Who saw you bring back plenty of old favourites: K-9, the Master, Davros. Anything you didn’t get round to?

RTD I would have loved to have done a Star Trek crossover. The very first year, we talked about it. Then Star Trek finally went off air. Landing the Tardis on board the Enterprise would have been magnificent. Can you imagine what their script department would have wanted, and what I would have wanted? It would have been the biggest battle.

From this interview with RTD and Tennant

...

I can't lie. The mere thought puts 'quivers in my nethers' as [livejournal.com profile] fashionbeast would try to phrase it politely. In another universe, this probably happened on Enterprise and I didn't watch because I was all 'fuckin' goddamn Enterprise, goddamn Borg episode.' And it was probably right after [livejournal.com profile] aj made me Doctor Who season one disks and I was all, 'ppft, this show sucks, goddamn Rose Tyler.'

Actually, I'll be straight: writing that out just convinced me it was a horrible idea. Thank fuck that didn't happen.

In other news, I just finished the third season of Slings and Arrows. Best. Show. Ever. I wish I lived in Boston so that [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns would have come over and slapped me up the head several times until I watched it. OH WELL. SOMETIMES THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE YOU COME TO LATE. LIKE DOCTOR WHO. AND SLINGS AND ARROWS.
