Obama names Two Net Neutrality fighters to FCC transition team.

I saw Quantum of Solace yesterday with Cooper, and we both really enjoyed the crap out of it. Not sure why exactly people have been claiming the plot is wonky: it's sort of big and expansive, but all made sense to me. (This is apparently the week for that.)

1. Quantum.

It's a cool name. Apparently Cooper didn't realize that the new group was named Quantum until we left the theater. (So maybe stuff like this is why people are claiming the plot was weak? I mean, I went out and took a piss during the bit where the CIA gets in bed with Quantum and I still understood what was happening.) I was all: O_o, but that's why they had little Q pins, Cooper!

2. The Plot.

Plus, it's a fucking Bond film. The fact that this has a complex plot at all is something of a miracle. Besides, maybe it is hard to understand if you're not current on the Bolivian water revolt or something.

3. M.

M gets to go out in the FIELD. OOO. On the way to the theater, I was explaining my love for Judi Dench as M to Cooper as like: she's mumsy. She's like the sort of mom you'd have if you had grown up to be a hardened killing fuck machine like Bond. And then they called my bluff in the actual film. Hawt. I hope there is a lot of M/Bond porn for Yuletide.

4. Bond girls rock.

Strawberry Fields gets dipped in oil. (Thus making her the Bond girl that dies in the course of the film.) Generally sympathetic, kind of stupid when Bond just dumps her at the party and you know she's going to eat it because she obviously doesn't have field experience. But this new Bond is kind of dumb like that a lot in this movie.

Mainly, I have a lot of love for Camille, even though I later expressed surprise that Bolivia has such bad ass secret agents. Cooper, meanwhile, thought it was unrealistic that she had single-handedly infiltrated Quantum without having ever killed before. Whatever, she is sexyhot.

Also, her sexy backscars make me think I should flaunt mine.

More importantly, as the younger-yet-similar to Bond female character, her relationship has enough differential strength to stand up to his relationship with M. Not quite enough, but close. It's a good start, especially since she's apparently tipped to become a recurring character.

5. Tosca.

There is a fight sequence. With multiple secret agencies. In the last act of TOSCA. AWESOME.

6. Vesper Lynd's necklace

I pointed at the screen and said, "Oh my God, her necklace!" :0

Things I Did Not Like:

1. Mathias's abrupt return and abrupt death

WTF BOND. Just let the old man go out on his own? It was a big flag that Rene would later turn up dead, but it was extra weak that Bond basically does murder him and then dumps his body in a trash bin. This is just about the coldest fucking thing ever done in movies.

I'm going to see it again on Tuesday, I'll probably have more clever thoughts later. At the very least: this is the first time in my life I'm really into the Bond franchise, so whatever they're doing it is correct and good.

In other news: my brother was talking about his favorite pundits in the car yesterday, so I said, 'hm, sounds like you're now old enough for the West Wing'. After a tiny bit of symbolic kvetching, we puddled under the covers and watched the first three episodes together. Half way through the first scene with Bartlet, my brother turned to me and said: "Oh my god, this really /is/ the best show ever."

Ha ha ha. And when I came home today, he had these observations: one, that having seen the Christmas episode he now understood what I saw in Josh and Donna because they are very cute together. Two: every fourth episode he describes as a 'guilt trip episode' in which a significant portion of the action revolves around someone feeling guilty for something someone else did. I'm not exactly sure how that works out, but it struck me as a very clever thing to say about the show.

LOL.. I was thinking the same damned thing but I think that's part of the appeal of this Bond, he's such a cold SOB! I was born and bred on this franchise (my father dragged me to them as kid) but I don't think I've ever been as into them as I am right now. Part of it is that they've managed to really shake up the cliche ridden franchise but most of it is the eye candy... Daniel Craig is smoking hot!!! Damn... must go find myself a Bond icon right now.

I think it's the first time ever I asked my dad if we can go see the Bond flick. LOL.

I can't wait until QoS comes out on DVD for the deleted scenes. I swear every man in that film was fucking every other man. I was like BOND AND MATHIS CAN YOU GET A ROOM PLZ! I want to see what they had to cut out of Greene, though.

TOSCA SCENES FTW! That was probably my favorite part of the film, aside from the copious amounts of Judi Dench.

Ash and I are going to see it again too. My mind was mostly preoccupied with how it was going to help/hurt our argument in the paper on Casino Royale we are presenting; so, I'd like to actually watch it for shits and giggles now.

I want to see if there's stuff I didn't catch.

I want Bond to be bisexual in canon. Except I think it might seriously scare the hell out of people.

Judi Dench! We're like THIS close to her having an actual action scene. Maybe next film.

Ugh, I about wet my pants with the brilliance of Tosca in this Bond's canon. And the metatextual "Tosca's not for everyone." Yeah, that's right, haters to the left.

As to Tosca...YES!

As to wanting Bond to be bi-sexual in canon...I completely agree. I think he is completely the type of guy to be bi.

Maybe in ten years we'll be cool enough for that. Sigh.

Your brother has favorite pundits??

Dare I ask who they are?

Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow. And then I asked if she had a crush on her and he said no, and also, "She's a lesbian." Ha.

Aww, Brother is so adorkable. Also? I love that you're hooking him on West Wing. The real questions are... who's his favorite and what does he think of Sam and Josh? Hehehehehehe

He thinks Josh is his favorite, because Sam is 'boring'. Also, Leo has an adorable grampa smile. Unfortunately, he also thinks Toby is a bit boring.

the kick-ass action scenes were awesome (foot chase with horse race! operatic shoot-em-up!) and judi dench was more awesome than those, but it felt like a bourne movie. there wasn't enough eye-candy or levity. and i usually can follow a plot along better than anyone around me, but i got lost half-an-hour in.

Fair enough. It was Bourne-like, but so was Casino Royale.
