First Showing on Twitter says that January Jones is your new Emma Frost.

My feelings are thoroughly mixed.

So... Xavier and Magneto are going to end up having a love triangle over Emma-as-the-White-Queen as rumored? Such bullshit. Emma would just have sex with them both. Possibly on the psychic plane. And um, honestly, I don't hate January Jones but she's not my pick for Emma. (That would be Tricia Helfer.)

That said, I can't complain too much if it ends up there's a lot of Xavier/Magneto/Emma fic. That would be hot. Make it happen, fandom.

Mad Men is awesome and everything...and it works for her character there...but she, uh, kinda sucks at acting... I mean...I just...yeah I can't see it here.

Guh, Tricia Helfer would be an amazing Emma Frost. :( I like Jones well enough on Mad Men, though.

She was truly awful in Pirate Radio, Jones.

Ah, that's a shame. There's this kind of... flatness to her that I think really *works* for her character on MM, but I haven't seen it translate to other things. :(

I thought that Wolverine Origins movie which I didn't see established Emma as a kid in Scott's age as far as the movieverse is concerned and the First Class film would present young M & X, so how would that work anyway with the timelines? Unless we're declaring X3 & the Wolverine film null and void, which, hey, no objection from me.

Anyway: Tricia Helfer would be my ideal movieverse Emma, too, but judging from the two seasons of Mad Men I've watched, January Jones can act, so... cautious optimism? Not about a romantic triangle storyline, though. It seems so very unlikely, as you say. Is the triangle thing confirmed?

I'm perfectly fine with the Wolverine film being uncanon, especially in regards to Emma, as that movie has her as Kayla Silverfox's SISTER but maintains the Kayla = Native (First Canadian?) background. Which just makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

A LOT of people are assuming this movie reboots the entire X-Men Movieverse to bring it in alignment with the other Marvel film franchises, which I think might be likely due to some of the other casting. Except that as far as I know, they're still making the Wolverine sequel in Japan?

My other thought is that I believe the movie just calls her 'Emma' and that the only power she shows is turning into diamonds, I think. Since First Class seems to involve the Hellfire Club (ie: a lot of the news stories are saying Jones is playing 'White Queen', and we already know they cast Kevin Bacon as Shaw) maybe this Emma Frost is just telepathic? It isn't as if Emma isn't a common enough name for there to be two mutants named Emma.

I half suspect the storyline to be cribbed from Ultimates and the recent X-Men cartoon in which the Hellfire Club is a secret gathering for mutants who worship the Phoenix.

January Jones was terrible in Pirate Radio, which is the only other thing I've seen her in, which doesn't bode well for me. I generally think she works well in Mad Men since her character in that is nothing but a repressed veneer of what Betty Draper considers the feminine ideal - and Betty's relationship with her children might translate well if this is supposed to be an Emma Frost who is also a Headmistress.

The triangle thing is heavily rumored. I'm half hoping that they mean that Emma and Magneto are fighting over CHARLES because... yeah.

Also interesting: they cast a young Mystique and a young Magneto. I have no idea what that's about in the slightest but one presumes it has to be some kind of flashback as there's also an adult Mystique. (Maybe Mystique is taking the place of Magda?)

...but didn't they also cast Rose Byrnes as a young Moira McTaggart? Between this and Mystique I'd say the (het) romantic relationships for both Charles and Erik are already covered. (Especially when there's a younger Mystique in adition to an adult one.)

"Only" telepathic Emma: well, she didn't get her secondary (i.e. diamond-turning) mutation until the Morrison era as far as I recall; in the Hellfire Club days she really was solely a telepath. Mind you, since the first clash between the X-Men and the Hellfire Club people was all about Mastermind trying to make Jean into the Black Queen and thus triggering the Phoenix, they have to come up with a new plot anyway.

Wolverine sequel: no idea. Do they still have Hugh Jackman under contract? If so, I don't think they'll drop the X-men movieverse continuity since they made it it the Wolverine story, basically, his popularity is still raging, and as long as they have an option for more Hugh!Logan, they'll keep it. If otoh that's off the cards, I can see them going for a reboot a la Batman...
